Listening to the Tales of the Earth
The process of making porcelain fragments, or pottery, used in the "Inside" series looks similar to ceramics. After drying and breaking the clay, filter it through a sieve to make fine soil powder, and mix pigment and water to make a dilute dough. However, instead of making it by hand here, the artist spreads it thinly with a brush. The artist's shoulders, arms, and hands are clearly shown in the brush strokes. A painting made of earth enters a high-temperature kiln and endures a long time, and the artist waits patiently. When thin porcelain paintings are finally created, the artist breaks them back into pieces, collects pottery of various sizes, and draws the picture again on a large screen. Destruction and creation are repeated between the acts of drawing. Kim Ji-ana's work is clearly distinguished from crafts in that it adds the act of making and drawing one's own paint with soil.
a place of conversation opened by light
The artist's recent pursuit of a blank space symbolizes oriental beauty while meaning an empty space where you can embrace anything. Pieces made by constantly coordinating the relationship between soil, water, fire, and air create possibilities by meeting the nuances of light that change from moment to moment. A work that seems to be alive now speaks to us. What are you looking at now. A unique place is born whenever the unique beings of nature meet equally. It is a place of friendly conversation created by the author.
Of course, our daily lives in a huge society are as unsettling as thin pottery. However, the fragile-looking pieces are actually very hard because they have withstood fire. If you tap it, it makes a cheerful sound instead of breaking it. Our hearts, which have been built up every day through pain, are also stronger than expected. Just as nature does not collapse easily no matter what it encounters, the more we encounter, intertwine, and persistently live with other beings without fear, the harder it becomes. Kim Ji-ana's screen metaphors such a rarity. His self-breathing works are reborn by meeting different lights, times, places, and the eyes of the audience every time. With the light staying on the surface, our story continues to shake. That's why we can embrace more. Kim Ji-ana's works prove that shaking and change are not anxiety, but other words of being alive.
